connection, lock, stock and barrel, will be cared for, not only now but in the future, by the Japanese flng. The encroachment of the Japanese in India is a matter which is receiving the gravest attention of the Goverment and the maintenance of the Britim

Line to and from India is, in the opinion of all those who have a knowledge of the present position of the greatest National im -portance. As regards this Colony it must be remembered that the stemers of our Calcutta service carry the bulk of Native Emigrants between here and the Straits. This trade is of great value to the Colony and owing to the already depleted tonnage in the trade, the passage rates have advanced from the nominal rate of 89 to 18. The Straits Government is already disturbed over the question of travelling facilities for emigrante and an increase, rather than a decrease of tonnage, is urgently desired.

From Hongkong to Shanghai we operate 3,000 tons steamers which are the feeders and the distributors of the large River steamers under the British flag operating on the

Yangteze.

Should more particulars be desired of other lines where the smaller vessels of the Fleet are employed I shall be glad to provide them,

(8d.) A. Sutherland.
